Buying a new window air conditioner

When I went shopping for a new window air conditioner, I was surprised by the compact size and lightweight design.

For a long time, I made do with a window air conditioner that I inherited from my brother when he moved away. It was at least ten years old when he gave it to me. The unit was extremely heavy and bulky and made a ton of noise when it operated. It always sounded like it was working really hard and yet it didn’t provide all that much cool air. The cooling unit used up a great deal of energy and it gave off an unpleasant, musty smell. I never considered replacing it, because I assumed that window air conditioners were quite expensive. Every fall, I’d carry that giant air conditioner up the very narrow and steep stairs to the attic. In the spring, I’d need to haul the cooling unit back down those same stairs. By the time I managed to shove the air conditioner into the window, I’d end up with a very sore back. Since it was a tight fit into the frame of the window, I needed to get rather aggressive with my installation techniques. A couple of years ago, I pushed a bit too hard and sent that air conditioner straight through the window. It fell two stories and smashed into a million pieces. Since it landed in the driveway, I was fortunate that it didn’t hit my car or cause any further damage. When I went shopping for a new window air conditioner, I was surprised by the compact size and lightweight design. For a little over a hundred dollars I was able to purchase a far more energy efficient and sophisticated model. The new air conditioner is easy to install, easily keeps the bedroom perfectly cool and makes hardly any noise. I love that I can make adjustments through a cordless remote. I don’t even need to get out of bed to change the temperature or fan speed.
