After retiring from our jobs, my husband and I started looking for something else to keep us busy and earn some money. Since the two of us are both exceptionally handy and knowledgeable in construction, we decided to start buying and selling houses. We look for properties in good neighborhoods that are selling for a reasonable price. Houses that have been left empty or neglected are often available for a lot less than they could ultimately be worth. As long as there is a solid foundation and structure, we can handle just about everything else. My husband and I have experience replacing walls, running electrical wires, installing plumbing and completely gutting and remodeling kitchens and bathrooms. One of the only jobs we stay away from is heating and cooling equipment installation. Prior to purchasing a house, we hire a certified HVAC contractor to inspect and evaluate the entirety of the heating and cooling system. If the ductwork needs to be replaced or the furnace is beyond help, we often walk away from the project. In most cases, updating heating and cooling systems is simply too expensive. However, there are exceptions and we rely on the HVAC contractor to provide knowledgeable recommendations. We always have the heating and cooling equipment professionally serviced to optimize the efficiency, capacity, safety and reliability of the system. Most often, we live in the houses during the end stages of the renovation process. We verify that all of the essential systems, such as electricity, plumbing, heating and cooling are operating properly. While we strive to make some money on each project, we also want to be sure we’re providing a good deal for the buyer as well.
