I think it may sound peculiar to say but my brother lives without any kind of HVAC.

Now it’s not that he is broke and that is why he lives without the HVAC, he lives without an HVAC because he chooses to do so.

It’s not like he lives in a neutral climate where it’s not easily needed for him to have a heating or cooling system, no that is not the case at all, he doesn’t use any kind of heating or cooling system even though he can afford to do so, his reason for not using a heating and cooling system is that he says it is unnatural and he will only use natural ways to heat his home. I wish I was joking when I say that when he says natural ways he wants to have a fire burning in his home and I do not mean a fireplace. He built a makeshift fire pit and set his living room on fire to keep himself warm. Obviously this is easily dangerous and highly stupid to do and it sincerely baffles me that someone could do this. I even offered to buy him a space furnace but he didn’t want one. It gets easily chilly here in the winter time and I always worry about him but he is easily superstitious about heating and cooling systems and thinks there’s nothing great that comes from them and so he refuses to use one. He keeps himself hot by wrapping himself in several layers of blankets and coats.

Shortly after my husband and I retired, we bought a small cabin that was deep in the woods. We had always enjoyed the outdoors, and the cabin was perfect for quiet getaways. We were less than a mile from town, but there was a lot of privacy in its location. The only source of heating was a fireplace. With ten acres of trees surrounding us, we were sure we could find enough downed wood to keep the fireplace burning and heat our cabin. Neither one of us thought about how much work it would be to gather the wood and split it into smaller pieces. My husband’s back was soon giving him a lot of trouble, and I wasn’t interested in doing that much work. I thought there had to be a better way to heat the cabin. We had solar panels that ran the lights, and I wanted to know if there was some kind of heating we could get that could be run by the solar panels? My husband suggested we look into a mini split HVAC system. It was a ductless HVAC system. It ran by electricity and required no other equipment other than the HVAC system itself and the conduit that attached the outdoor unit to the indoor unit. After a few hours of research, we knew we would only need one unit, and we had enough money in the bank to pay for it and the installation. The HVAC technician who delivered and installed the mini split HVAC unit told us he never thought about using solar panels to run the system, and said it was a great idea. We now have heating and air conditioning whenever we go to the cabin.

I called the HVAC company two days ago to have some minor repairs done to my furnace.

• I didn’t mind waiting when they gave me an appointment that was more than 2 days away.

It gave me time to talk to my employer and let him know I was going to be late. The HVAC appointment was for the first thing in the morning. I thought I could easily be there by lunchtime. When the HVAC technician arrived, he told me he had looked at my call report, and he intimated it could take all day to repair the furnace. I couldn’t remember telling the service manager there were a lot of problems, and I wondered what he was talking about. I called the HVAC company and after explaining who I was; I asked them what they had in their notes that would make the technician think this was going to be a tough job. The service manager put me on hold for two minutes, and she sounded confused. She told me I had said I had a few minor issues, but nothing major. She had assumed it would be half an hour and the HVAC technician would be on his way. Five minutes later, I heard the HVAC tech’s phone ringing. After some quiet conversation, he came back upstairs and apologized. The service manager had given him the right name and address, but the notes attached were for his next furnace repair job, and not this one. I wished I had called my boss and told him it was going to be an all-day job. Twenty minutes later, the HVAC technician was gone, and I could have spent the entire day doing some much needed cleaning and relaxing.

I have been trying to lower my heating and air conditioning bills for the past month and I must be doing something wrong because it seems like no matter what I do that nothing is working.

• Then it dawned on me, why don’t I just look up online how I can save money on my heating and cooling bills? Surely the heating and air conditioning businesses would have some energy saving tips that could be useful for me.

So I decided to look up online what are some ways that I can save money on my heating and cooling bills. Recently I’ve noticed that my air conditioning bills in particular have been skyrocketing. I’m not oblivious as to why this is, it’s because I’ve been running my air conditioning system almost all day everyday. But I can’t help it! We’re in the summer months and it is so hot out that it’s unbearable to have to be in the house without an air conditioning system. It is too hot to go outside. So what else can I do? Sure I can run a fan but a fan is really inefficient compared to my central air conditioning system. Luckily for me when I looked up how to save money on your energy bills I found that there were a lot of options that were listed as ways that you could lower your cost on the heating and AC companies website. So one of the first things it mentioned was to not do what I was doing, which was running the air conditioning system all day long even when you’re not home, which I admit I’m guilty of. The second thing that they suggest is to make sure that your air conditioning system is running efficiently. If your AC isn’t running efficiently then you’re more likely to have higher AC bills. Now that I think about it I haven’t had an ac tune up in forever. I think I’ll schedule one.

This last week my air conditioning system was having problems yet again. I’m not sure what’s wrong with this air conditioning system if it just isn’t a good model or if I just happened to get a lemon but I’ve had nothing but problems with it from the moment I’ve gotten it. I had an AC guy come out and then he would go and take a look at it. What he told me was not at all what I wanted to hear, in fact it was so much what I didn’t want to hear that I chose to ignore what he said entirely which turned out to be a very bad idea. He told me that my air conditioning system was not going to last much longer and I needed to seriously think about getting a new AC system. I just refused to believe it, I told him that my air conditioning system had issues yes but it should certainly be fixed. He agreed that it could be fixed but told me that the repairs were going to get so expensive that it wouldn’t even be worth fixing, he said it would be cheaper for me just to get a new air conditioning system. I bought this air conditioning system a couple years ago and when I purchased it it was way cheaper than I could have ever imagined it being. You know the saying if something is too good to be true it probably is? Yeah well that definitely applies here. Unfortunately I didn’t think through what I was doing and I just purchased the air conditioning system and that is how I’ve had nothing but problems since the day I bought it. I really need to listen to the AC guy and just get a new AC system. Accept it and move on

My brother moved five states away after graduation, and I hadn’t seen him for around two years.

His art gigs weren’t as rewarding, and he got a casual job working at an air conditioning company which piqued his interest in the air conditioning system business. He started as a salesman for the company, but as his interest grew, he decided to sign up for technician training which has allowed him to practice a bit, but he wants to go further and get an associate degree. My parents took advantage of the new expert in the house and immediately jumped in for a free consultation. My brother gladly offered to help them upgrade our old furnace to a dual-fuel system, which he explained would help significantly with energy efficiency, especially with the rising fuel cost. They already had quality HVAC equipment, but that was functional for the last seven years, and they have complained a bit too many times that they are paying for a lot more a/c repair, yet they’ve not neglected recommended a/c care. I have to admit, all of us, except my dad, switched off when our brother started going on about SEER ratings and complex cooling product specifics. It sounded like information that I could pay attention to only when I needed it. We should have known our parent’s pride would have them send every one of their friends to come to seek HVAC advice from the family a/c workman. Throughout his holiday, my brother supervised an a/c install for an old couple in the neighborhood, checked on our aunt’s air conditioning filter since she was having air purification trouble, and changed a washable filter that was worn out.
