Early retirement was such a blessing. After almost 35 years at the same company, I guess I just really didn’t realize the toll my career was taking on my life. Right out of college, I started my career with the company. And I ended that career at 54. It wasn’t easy saying goodbye to that perfect corner office with the zone controlled HVAC. But honestly, it allowed me to have the most full final chapters of my life. With my retirement in hand, I left the cold and the gas furnace behind. Trust me, it was easy to embrace a land of sunshine and a winter where the heat pump was mostly quiet. My wife said it was like marrying the old me. We were out of the air conditioning playing tennis or golf almost every day. There were plenty of times for day adventures together. Those are the best because we’d always end it with a lovely dining situation somewhere with awesome quality heating and air. We haved lived this magic life for a long time now. So it’s quite natural that I’ve slowed down a bit now that I’m nearly 80. After a health scare, things checked up a bit for me. It’s okay though because I’m still getting around and living a life. Sure there’s more time sitting watching what’s going on outside from the heating and cooling comfort of the sunroom. I suppose the fact that I really have gotten into poker over the last few years could have something to do with it.

But I think betting on a 25 year old heat pump was just really more bourn out of stupidity.

It’s true, I discovered poker in my early 40’s with my girlfriends and fell in love with it. I have so much fun with the Texas hold em type games. It’s not super serious and there’s never any real amount of money at stake. However, I just love the strategy and even started to learn more about poker online from the air conditioning of my house. But when the HVAC technician told me that the HVAC unit needed to be replaced, that was a house wins proposition. As part of the HVAC service plan that I pay for, the heat pump gets seasonal HVAC maintenance every fall and again every spring. Last year the HVAC professional told me I needed to get with it as the heat pump wasn’t going to last much longer. Did I get with it? Well barely. I started saving money and I spoke with the HVAC contractor who helped me with the process. But I think it was more just me passively deciding that I was betting on the heat pump to get me one more summer of air conditioning. That’s how it really went down. Had that been a hand of poker, I would have folded and instead, I doubled down on a 25 year old heat pump. Of course, the heat pump died in the middle of July. But that’s how that goes when you go with some of your dumber instincts.

If there is one thing that I really love about having a modern heating and a/c system, it is all of the benefits that come with it.

I don’t mean to brag but I have a top of the line heating and air conditioning system.

It is because it is so well made that I rarely worry about it ever breaking down on me. However, sometimes there are exceptions and one day when I was going to relax I went to turn the air on, I opened the app on my phone to adjust the temperature since I have a smart thermostat but nothing happened. I figured the app was glitching and so I went over to the thermostat and attempted to change it manually but nothing happened. What was going on? Why was it not working? I knew I would need to call a heating and cooling guy to come out here and service the problem. The following morning I had a professional HVAC technician come out to my house and examine my heating and air conditioning unit. It was upon inspection that he realized that the HVAC unit had become severely clogged by stuff outside. When I looked at the outdoor heating and a/c unit I saw what he meant. It was full of sticks, leaves, and all sorts of debris! Once the heating and air conditioning professional removed the clog from my heating and cooling unit he instructed me to try and turn it on again. I did as asked and went inside and turned on the air conditioner with the thermostat. Success! It worked. Now I have a working heating and cooling system again.

Some people like to go door-to-door to sell things, and some people love opening the door to these visitors and having a chat with them.

I however don’t care for people coming to my house and trying to sell me things, I’ll make an exception if it is some cute kids selling cookies.

Today, some guy I didn’t know came up to my door and knocked. He was dressed all fancy and had what looked like some HVAC products placed on the porch next to him, with some air filters neatly tucked under his arm. When I opened the door he greeted me and asked if I would be interested in a free air filter? I agreed, I don’t turn down free. He then explained that he was the owner of a new HVAC business just down the road and was going around and meeting all the new people. He then asked if I would be interested in any heating and cooling products, he gestured with his hand and showed me some window air conditioning systems and a few HEPA filters, and even a portable space heater. I saw the window air conditioner and knew that it was something that I had been needing for quite some time. When he saw me look interested in the window air conditioning system he gave me a nice discount on it. I decided to go ahead and purchase it right then and there. It was a good thing too, because that window a/c has been excellent for my home. The guy gave me his business card to his heating and air conditioning company and I am going to go and check them out this weekend.

When you buy a house, there are a series of checks and balances to make sure you get what you spend money for. There is a real estate agent, loan agents, insurance agents, and everyone has paperwork to ensure everything is perfect, but however, when you buy a condo at an auction, all bet are off, but you might get a piece of property for a few hundred bucks, and who knows what you might find there? But there are no checks and balances, and once you spend money the money you own it no matter what the condition is. I knew it was a crapshoot when I bought the old house, however truthfully aside from the lack of an Heating and A/C system the locale is in fine shape. The greatest concerns with these old houses are the plumbing and the weather conditions control systems. If the pipes are bad, then the locale might be too much trouble to bother fixing up, however the same is not tploy of the weather conditions control system. I have come to expect that the older locales will either have no central Heating and A/C system at all, or have one so old it has to be detachd and upgraded, compared to the logistical nightmare of replacing all the pipes, replacing a central Heating and A/C system is relatively simple. I don’t even bother looking at the central Heating and A/C system before I buy a locale, because I just feel that it isn’t any good. If a condo is a great investment, then paying a few grand for a up-to-date weather conditions control system is not a major expense.

I got an offer from a major corporation to join their workforce.

I had to admit, they put together a legitimately charming package.

I would get much better health and dental insurance than I currently have, plus a 401K, something I currently don’t have at all. There is a liberal amount of paid leave time, as well, besides the big jump in spend money from what I am making now. They couldn’t be much more generous, quite frankly, however I’m still not sure I will take the offer! Right now I am one of three employees at a small, outlaw Heating and A/C company, and even though the spend money sucks, I legitimately enjoy my task. When I say “outlaw Heating and A/C company” I mean that we are not one of the major companies. In this neighborhood there are a lot of big time corporate contracts, and several landlords and business owners signs exclusive deals with a unique Heating and A/C company to handle all of their needs. The two of us don’t have any contracts, we operate outside the lines, and pick up all the little Heating and A/C tasks the big boys can’t or won’t do. If you need heating device for your cannabis crops over the winter, we are the boys to call. If your survivalist cult needs a geothermal heat pump for your underground bunker, we are the boys to call. If you need Heating and A/C labor however want to spend money money and not leave a paper trail, we are the boys to call! The Heating and A/C corporation can keep their money, because I enjoy being one of the outlaws.

“Do what you enjoy and you never labor a afternoon in your life.” This is a lie! I do what I enjoy all the time, and I still have to labor to spend money the bills! What I enjoy to do is write horror stories and record them for my podcast, and a Scary Home Companion.

I spend untold hours working on this show, and it really makes me glad, however of course, it doesn’t spend money me a dime! All this time and effort comes from passion, and I am addicted to it… That said, I still need to labor at least 45 hours a week for the Heating and A/C business, or else I can’t afford to chase my passion.

I don’t mean to sound ungrateful, because the Heating and A/C business I labor for pays me unquestionably well, and also offers a generous benefits package. Of any of the local Heating and A/C businesss, this one is really the best because he takes care of his people, however but if I had my druthers, I would labor for any Heating and A/C business I would hole up in my office and spend my days writing and recording. As far as afternoon tasks go, being an Heating and A/C tech is a great way to make a living! When I clock out at the end of the afternoon I can forget about heating and cooling systems and focus 100% on the show, because I never have to take my labor apartment with me. One afternoon I hope to save up enough money from this Heating and A/C task to retire early, and then my whole life can be about my show.
