The charcoal pre-filter medium can be bought in rolls and then cut to fit the size of whatever filter you’re using in your central HVAC system or air purifier. The charcoal absorbs airborne odors as air passes through the pre-filter.

And of course, you are in charge of all maintenance of the home you live in if you are by yourself. I had to learn HVAC maintenance while living on my own. It’s not just about changing air conditioner or furnace filters, but also by keeping the HVAC system clean. I started buying air conditioner cleaning spray to clean my evaporator coils inside of my air conditioner at least once a year. If I clean the A/C coil like this yearly, it prevents any microbial buildup that could lead to problems down the road. This is key to maintaining good indoor air quality. Combine this with frequent filter changes and you can have clean indoor air on a long term basis.

Having a job with a degree of schedule flexibility is great on one hand, but it’s also dangerous when you have the power to put off work until the last minute, as you might be tempted to procrastinate each week until you get down to the wire and start having serious anxiety attacks over whether or not you can actually get your work done in time to meet your various deadlines. But I don’t just procrastinate with work deadlines, I do it with chores and maintenance around the house as well. For instance, I nearly put off servicing my central furnace ahead of my Christmas party this year. I went to a holiday party one year that was cut short because the host lost use of their heating system at a random moment during the bash. I was disappointed that the party was cut short, but I understood why and knew they didn’t have a choice in the matter. After that situation, I knew I wanted to make sure the same thing didn’t happen to me during my own Christmas party. Thankfully, I remembered to get my furnace serviced at the last minute before the actual party.

I knew it was about that time of month, and I was expecting her phone call.
Ever since she and dad got a divorce, she took over all the maintenance in the house. The only thing she didn’t do was change the air filters. Last week, she called and asked if I would change the air filter when I had a chance. That weekend, I headed to the house. When I got there, the air filters she had were different than what she normally used. I told her they didn’t look right. She was saying that the home center didn’t have the regular air filter and told her these were similar, but from a different company. There was nothing similar about this air filter and the one that was in the furnace. I wanted to know if she was sure she got the right size air filter, and she said she did. She had the sales person double check because she thought they looked too small. I went to put the air filter in the furnace, but mom was right. The air filter was way too small. I took the box back to the home center and told them they gave mom the wrong size. I showed them what she needed and the woman at the counter said they were similar. I wasn’t going to argue with her and told her I wanted the money back. I went to the HVAC company and bought the air filter that belonged in the furnace.
He put a new thermostat on the wall, and set the temperature to seventy.
I came into the house last week, and my wife was staring at the thermostat. I thought there was something wrong with it, but it seemed to be working like it should. The following day, she was standing there staring at the thermostat again, when I got home from work. After three day, I asked her what is your problem with that thermostat. She told me it wasn’t her problem, but the thermostat’s problem. She would set the temperature at seventy, but the temperature was going up to seventy-five before it shut off. She thought seventy-five was too warm. I looked at the thermostat and made a mental note to check the temperature when the furnace turned off. Sure enough, the furnace came on when the temperature hit sixty-eight, but it didn’t turn off until it was at least seventy-five. I called the HVAC company and told them what was happening, while asking if it was normal. The HVAC technician tech said you could set the temperatures where the furnace would turn off and off, but if seventy-five was uncomfortable, he would come look at it. When he got there, he told us the thermostat was definitely malfunctioning. He put a new thermostat on the wall, and set the temperature to seventy. When the temperature hit seventy-two, it turned off and then turned on at sixty-eight. He said it may cycle on and off more often, but the temperature would be more steady, and the new thermostat was an energy saver thermostat. I thanked him for replacing the thermostat and paid him. My wife wasn’t staring at the thermostat when I got home from work the next day.
