My broken leg caused a lot of muscle atrophy

My brother and I were on our way to a basketball game when a truck swerved into our lane and we hit the side of a bridge.

My brother was severely injured and both of my legs were broken.

My brother still has problems with his back and neck and my broken leg took months and months to heal. After the legs healed, I had to go to a health and rehabilitation center to work on regaining muscle mass. I worked with a physical therapist four days a week. She showed me exercises I could do at home to help speed up recovery times. I lost a lot of muscle during the time that my leg was broken. Because I could not use my muscles, they began to atrophy. Broken bones usually cause a lot of muscle atrophy when they take a great deal of time to heal, so the doctor was not surprised by the loss of range of motion in my leg. I spent six months going to the specialist at the health and rehabilitation center, but I finally have full use of both legs. I will never be able to run long-distance marathons, but I wasn’t excited about that before the accident. The personal trainer at the health and rehab center really gave me courage, strength, and confidence to tackle my injury. I still talk to Courtney and we are good friends. There is a whole group of ex-patients that get together to hike every weekend. It’s usually a lot of fun and a slow and steady pace.
