Troubleshooting a heat pump that leaks water

Heat pumps have two combined functions, heating and air conditioning. When your heat pump leaks, you may first need to check the coils on your HVAC unit. The leakage may result from low refrigerant levels in your unit, especially in the summer. A heat pump and an air conditioner need to have enough refrigerant to function effectively. Low refrigerant levels cause ice to form as cold air cannot flow through the coils. This becomes a significant concern since it dramatically affects the heat pump’s ability to function effectively. The leaking happens when the ice melts and creates puddles of water that might leak into your HVAC unit to cause severe damage. To stop the leak, you will need to seal the leak and refill your heat pump’s refrigerant level. Another reason could be your drainage system. Your heat pump has condensate pans that trap normal condensation from the air through a drain line into a pan that leads to another drain. When the drain pan and the drain line becomes clogged with dirt and debris, water runs over the drainage and leaks. To stop the leakage, you can appropriately adjust the pan to enable the unit to drain the water effectively, and if it is because of clogged drainage, you will need to unclog the coils and clean the drain pan by removing dirt and debris. The best way to address the problem before it happens is by carrying out proper HVAC unit maintenance. Scheduling yearly inspection from a qualified HVAC technician for your HVAC system will ensure your unit performs at optimal best.
