I guess that most people were concerned about their own families while in the pandemic, and for a good reason! There were a lot of people dying, and there were also a lot of people out of work. Life completely changed in a matter of weeks, and it took over a year before things began to go back to the way that they used to be! Due to all of this change, we forgot about local companies that might have suffered, including the Heating and Air Conditioning companies in your town. I am the owner of an Heating and Air Conditioning business, and I nearly had to close my Heating and Air Conditioning corporation due to the struggles that we opted to go through. First of all, most people forgot that building supplies increased in price, meaning that people did not want to build homes! Part of our job as an Heating and Air Conditioning corporation is to install up-to-date Heating and Air Conditioning units in new homes, and with no homes being built, the Heating and Air Conditioning corporation lost a significant portion of its income, then heating and Air Conditioning companies were also struggling to come by while in the pandemic. Heating and Air Conditioning companies were consistently getting sick from being in contact with people, and the Heating and Air Conditioning companies didn’t want to wear masks. If only one Heating and Air Conditioning company got sick with the virus, we had to shut the entire Heating and Air Conditioning corporation down for weeks, further lowering our profits. Thankfully, people still needed Heating and Air Conditioning companies since Heating and Air Conditioning units are typically splitting down, however otherwise, we would have had to shut our doors.

I had been forced to work from home for over two years.

I’m someone who enjoys having their own designated work space, so when I was told to gather my belongings and work from my own home, I was not happy.

I didn’t have an office space, so I was forced to work from my kitchen table or my living room couch. This was fine for a short while, but as the days turned into weeks, I quickly realized that I wouldn’t be returning anytime soon. As I continued to work from the table, I found my eyes drifting outside to the deck. I never used the deck due to weather, but I craved getting out of the house. Finally, it dawned on me that I needed to convert my deck into a sunroom that would work as my temporary office space! I got in touch with a contractor right away and he told me that it was completely possible. The only recommendation he had was that I install a ductless mini split unit. I didn’t like the idea of spending more money for the ductless unit, but the contractor assured me that it was worth it. I’m glad I trusted his opinion because the ductless mini split unit has taken my new sunroom to the next level. I’m able to use the space so much more because it’s temperature controlled, whereas, I would have never used it if the ductless unit wasn’t installed. I’m so happy with my new work space.

This is my favorite time of the year.

The days are filled with sunshine, the temperature is finally warming up and the breeze is perfect.

The temperature is so moderate that there’s almost no difference between the inside and the outside. I can walk around in shorts and a shirt and feel nothing but comfort. In this region, the weather is so great during this time of the year that we rarely need to turn on the AC. In fact, I prefer to not turn on my AC system until at least the middle of July because it’s not necessary. If I open up the doors and windows, there’s a nice breeze that flows through the house and keeps the entire place cool. My AC system couldn’t keep my house this cool unless I wanted to pay for it. Usually, I like to challenge myself to see how long I can last without turning my AC system on. There are some unusually hot days that tempt me to turn the AC on, but for the most part, I can make it until July before turning the AC on. During this time, I like to hire an HVAC company to come service my AC system. It’s the perfect time to have the equipment tuned before I have to actually use it. If the HVAC company comes and discovers something that needs to be replaced, I have time to order the parts and have it repaired before I’m in desperate need of cool air.

I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but I knew something was wrong with my AC system.

I live in this house every day, so it’s easy for me to notice when something feels different. The temperature of my home is fairly consistent each day, which is why I was able to notice something wrong in the first place. If I wasn’t at home so much, I don’t think I would have noticed problems until it was far too late. I noticed that some rooms were warmer than others and the air pressure was low coming from the air vents. I didn’t want to self evaluate the problem, so I contacted a good friend of mine who happens to be an HVAC professional. He was able to come to my house that evening and take a look at my AC system free of charge. He spent a lot of time walking in and out of my house, trying to find the source of the problem. He agreed that there was a problem, it just took him some time to locate it. Finally, he came back to me and said that my air conditioner was leaking refrigerant. My AC system was shutting down and short cycling because the refrigerant levels were low. If not addressed quickly, the AC system could shut down entirely and cause even more problems. Thankfully, my good friend was able to stop the leak and he had my AC system running properly before he left. I’m glad I didn’t have to wait for a hired professional to get to my house because the situation could have gotten much worse.

As if there weren’t enough things on my to do list, I had to add AC maintenance to the list.

Nobody ever wants to add AC maintenance to their list because it usually means something is wrong.

This is true for my case. I had been meaning to have my AC system serviced before the summer, but I never got around to it because I was tending to all the other things on my to do list. I rarely pay attention to my AC system because it’s not something I interact with daily. My house is cool because my thermostat settings are programmed and I never have to change the settings unless it’s a rare occasion. When I realized that my AC system was making odd noises and the air quality wasn’t as good as it usually is, I was forced to shift my focus. Instead of doing everything else on my to do list, I began working on finding a repair for my AC system. The only thing I knew to do was contact the HVAC company about sending someone out. The HVAC company sent an HVAC professional to my house within a few days and I explained the issues I was noticing. The HVAC professional examined my AC system in depth and he came back to me with a dirty air filter. According to him, the air filter was long overdue for a replacement and it was causing my AC system to work harder and less efficiently. The dirty air filter was also the source for the bad air quality. The HVAC professional told me that if I hadn’t skipped my tune up in the spring, I wouldn’t have had this issue.

In our old house, my husband and I had a smart thermostat that we really loved.

We loved the GEO tracking feature, WIFI capability, and the ability to make changes to our thermostat from anywhere at any time.

When we sold the home, we had to leave the smart thermostat with the house, but we knew that we’d purchase another one for our new home. It took us a few months to settle in before buying the new smart thermostat, but we were anxious to install it. My husband installed the previous smart thermostat, so we thought the process would be the same. Unfortunately, the smart thermostat wasn’t compatible with our HVAC system and there was a special connection that we needed to install. This was beyond our capability, so we hired a technician to come install the new smart thermostat and the additional wire. Unfortunately, after spending over an hour working on it, the technician told us that it wasn’t possible. Our HVAC system wasn’t comparable and the additional wire wouldn’t help. The technician told us that the only thing we could do was replace the HVAC system. We were extremely disappointed, because we had been looking forward to our smart thermostat and now we’d never get to enjoy it in our new house. This was not the news we were expecting, so we’re going to get a second opinion just to be sure. There has got to be a way for a smart thermostat to connect, because it just doesn’t seem possible that it wouldn’t.

When the head of HR announced that we would be working from home till further notice, I was elated.

It would save much time I would otherwise use for getting ready and in traffic. The first day felt off because I was not used to working from my house the whole day. I, however, got used to it. The first week went by without incident, and I was slowly getting into the new routine. On the weekend, I noticed that the indoor comfort had reduced, which all had to do with the heating device. The house was not getting warm though the geo heat pump was running. I tried to fidget with the digital thermostat to get the furnace to increase the heat, but nothing happened. I was not very conversant with heating technology or anything to do with the heating industry, so I entirely relied on the professionals. Calls to the heating dealer and other heating contractors went unanswered since it was the weekend. I settled on working near the fireplace to get some warmth. Come Monday, I was able to schedule much-needed heating maintenance. After checking the unit, the HVAC tech established that it required heating repair, and one part needed replacement. There were also some leaks in the ductwork, which explained the energy bill increase in the past month. The unit was partially dependent on electricity. Duct sealing would solve the problem of heat loss. I established that if I was going to work from home, I might as well have home services on speed dial and probably make friends with an HVAC serviceman or two.

If there were ever a drug abuse ambassador, it would be me. For almost a month, I had not been feeling okay, but it did not feel like anything serious, so I just took some self-prescribed medication and continued working at the home services company as an HVAC tech. On a Monday, I felt a bit faint, but since it was the last call of the day after a furnace installation, I decided to push myself harder. The homeowner had been vague on the phone because, besides her home address, she said she needed heating maintenance, and then the call disconnected. I went there prepared for all kinds of heating repairs just in case. When I got there, she told me that the geo heat pump constantly switched itself off. Given that she had one of the best heating devices in the heating industry, I knew something had to be very wrong. The installation at her house seemed fine, but after a thorough inspection, I discovered that the digital thermostat was the problem. It prompted the unit to shut down even after the owner manually switched it on. I also found a leak in the ductwork. Luckily, I had geared up for duct sealing. As I was going up the ladder, I started feeling dizzy. The last thing I remember was the lady calling someone saying that there was an HVAC tech who had fallen off the ladder and was not waking up, and then everything went black again. I woke up two hours later in a hospital. Over the years, I worked as an HVAC serviceman, having worked on every type of heating technology; this was a first. The doctor said I was very dehydrated and anemic.

The big house was a good thing, but it needed so much work that I wanted to sit there and break down.

From the look of things, it might have been cheaper to buy a home even though it was smaller. The first order of business was to call the heating dealer to inspect the heating device. I had to ensure that at least one thing was working before moving in, although half of my items were already in the house. The HVAC serviceman, after his inspection, said he had a lot he needed to tell about the unit. Panic set in after those words; with all the necessary work to make the house at least habitable, I could not afford to replace the furnace, or at least I thought it was a one. The HVAC tech told me the system was a bit more complicated than he anticipated. The house had a geo heat pump regulated by a digital thermostat. He would need to contact a local home services company specialist, but from what he had gathered from his inspection, the unit would need heating repair since it had been a while since it had received any heating maintenance. The ductwork was in good condition, but since the house had been uninhabited for a long time, duct sealing would be inevitable. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that I would own a home with my most coveted heating technology system. When my nana said she had the best the heating industry had to offer, I had no idea that this was what she meant. I sent a silent thank you to her.
