When the earth started to shake, I knew the HVAC unit was coming down

A couple of days ago, there was a 6.4 earthquake about an hour away from my hometown.

  • I didn’t feel the Earth moving, but my mom said she felt something in her house.

Earthquakes are not uncommon in this area. They occur frequently, but they are usually very small and often go unrecognized. A three or four is very difficult to notice, but a 6.4 will shake the whole town. I was surprised that I did not feel anything at all. Yesterday, I was working on an HVAC installation job. I was installing a ductless heating and air conditioning unit in a garage for one of my customers. The installation job was going very well and I wasn’t having any uncommon problems. I expected to finish with the ductless heating and air conditioning system in record time. I left a customer’s house for a couple of minutes, so I could grab a wrench and a pair of pliers from my truck. While I was walking outside, I felt the ground start to shake. I immediately knew there was an earthquake and I ran back to the garage. The HVAC unit was not fully attached to the wall. When the earth started to shake, I knew the HVAC unit was coming down. As soon as I ran into the garage, the Earth really began to shake. The shaking lasted for 10 or 15 seconds. I kept my hands on the heating and air conditioning unit so it would not fall to the ground. Earthquakes can be serious and sometimes deadly, but this one turned out to be no big deal.
